GEOGRAPHY

If you like to travel and see beautiful sights around the world, then geography is for you! This lesson will give you an overview of geography and how you can use it to learn about our world.

Where Would You Go?

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? Would you visit the African safari? The Australian outback? The South American rain forest? There are so many places to see in the world, you could never tire of visiting them all. That's why we have geography! In this lesson, we'll look at the definition of geography and what kinds of things you can learn about around the world.

Geography

Earth is huge! Containing 7 large continents and 5 wide oceans, there are so many things to discover in our world! So what is geography? Geography is the study of our world, including its people, places, environments, and relationships.

Let's take a look at the two sides to geography: humans around the world and the places in which they live!

Physical Geography

We study physical geography when we look at landforms, climate, and seasons. Earth is different on every continent. Right? North America is very different from South America in many ways! Physical geographers are the people who often use physical maps to study the differences in landforms around the world. Think about the last time you looked at a map! Maybe you studied a map in class or used one when you traveled to a new place!

Let's talk more about physical geographers and what they really do! Physical geographers often study how land-forms change. You may be wondering how landforms change. Well, have you ever looked outside after a bad storm? The land probably did not look the same after the storm! Natural events, such as storms, can cause land-forms to change. Physical geographers study all the natural disasters, as well as the atmosphere and how it is affected by pollution. They look at plants and flowers and why they grow in certain areas over others. How interesting! They look at climate patterns and meteorology. Physical geographers research physical geography in order to better understand our world.
